OUR PROJECTS:
Adopt-A-Home
The inefficiency of a boarding school setup for the normal development of children very quickly became evident. A decision was made to build individual houses with a maximum number of 14 children per house. This enables the children’s home to cater for the individual needs of each child
Jacaranda Children’s Home has 21 houses, and the Louis Botha Children’s Home has 11 houses. Many of these houses need to be restored and all of the houses need to be maintained. Currently three houses per year are being restored.
The restoration and maintenance of the above houses tends to be a difficult task, especially in a country where the economy is going through a very difficult time. Therefore we need all the assistance and support from companies such as yourself to support us in the care of our children!
Against this background a project was initiated called Adopt-a-Home. This project enables concerned individuals and companies to become involved in assisting needy houses to improve their infrastructure and facilities. These houses are virtually “adopted” by a “family of adapters”.
THE PROCESS:
The Adopt-A-Home project offers four distinct options for adoptions:
| 1. |
Adoption by individuals: who can adopt a house by offering their time, expertise and/or funds or any combination of these valuable inputs. |
| 2. |
Adoption by a group: Individuals can club together to adopt a house and offer time, expertise and/or funds. |
| 3. |
Adoption by a company: A company may choose to adopt a house of its choice |
| 4. |
Adoption by a group of companies: Companies may choose to partner to meet the minimum criteria for a company adoption programme. |
| 5. |
But the central concept is about building relationships between donors, children’s homes and the community. |
To ensure sustainability the process goes through numerous phases:
Phase One
| - |
The need of each house is prepared in a profile
|
Phase Two
| - |
Potential adopters are sought |
| - |
Profiles of identified houses are presented to potential donors |
| - |
potential adopters can choose a house they wish to adopt and the kind of adoption programme they wish to be part of |
| - |
An action plan is developed with stakeholders |
| - |
A letter, design plan and a whole house development proposal is submitted to the children’s home board for approval (Prepared by Elmien Durieux) |
| - |
A project steering committee and a project management committee which includes all stakeholders is formed |
Phase Three
| - |
Development work begins |
TAX BENEFITS:
The Income Tax Act allows tax payers who make donations to Public Benefit Organisations registered under section 18A to deduct these donations limited to a maximum of 5% of the donor’s taxable income before the donation.
By assisting the Jakaranda and / or Louis Botha Children’s Homes, you will be giving back to the community by supporting institutions who are efficiently controlled, to ensure that the funds donated, helps our children to live up to their full potential.
In exchange of your donations and support, we offer our sponsors free exposure through our databases, website (with a link to your website) on our websites (www.jacarandachildren.co.za / www.louisbothachildren.co.za), as well as assistance with regards to releasing press releases.

Beyond Beauty
Beyond Beauty is a training programme which focuses on developing young ladies in Jacaranda Children’s Home, and teaching them the finer art and details of etiquette - finishing and grooming. The training programme will be attended by 30 ladies between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. We would like to thank all our volunteers involved to make this dream a reality.
During this training programme we would like to give to each of the girls a beauty hamper including basic make up, skin care and hair care products. If you would like to become involved in this initiative by sponsoring beauty products or offering your expertise please do not hesitate to contact Elmien at 012-800-4700 or 082 897 8575.
The following topics will be covered during the Beyond Beauty training programme:
Social Etiquette:
Etiquette programs teach social and leadership skills that will last a lifetime. A foundation of good manners gives our young ladies an opportunity to learn and practice these skills; in fact much of their future successes depend on practical leadership and social skills.
Business Etiquette:
Topics that will be covered include: Building self confidence, introductions made easy, interview skills, handshaking as well as self respect and respect for others.
Make Up:
Make up enhances and improves whatever natural assets we have been blessed with. The young ladies will be taught the art of hygiene and various make up tools that make the job so much easier. They will learn how to adjust their make up from an active day at school or the mall and convert them into glamorous young ladies for evening social gatherings. Each lady will learn how to apply her make up for her specific face shape.
Hair Care:
It is important to know what products to use for each hair type, or just knowing how to maintain and keep hair in good condition. A professional hair consultant will be able to teach them all the tools and tricks of the trade.
Nutrition,Lifestyle and Exercise:
We will discuss the different exercise plans, eating disorders, living a balanced lifestyle, as well as setting up a good eating regime for each lady.
Charm & Body Language:
Our lives consist of making entrances, and we should hope that majority of them have a positive impact on the people who are receiving us. The ladies will be taught how to overcome the fear of entering a room full of people, or having to present to a classroom of people. We will look at the art of creating and having a presence, without coming across as too overbearing.
Dressing with Style and Accessorizing:
The way we dress says a lot about our personality. We cannot change our body shape in a drastic way; we can however give an impression simply by the way we dress. We will guide the ladies in the right direction, when choosing styles, colours and accessories. Accessories add the finishing touches to an outfit. We will look at how to experiment and decide on what looks best. The young ladies will be taught the art of balancing their accessories while always being comfortable.
Body Care, Hygiene and Nail Care:
Hands are our signatures and initial introduction about us. Our ladies will be introduced to the world of performing self manicures and pedicures. We should also not forget about the biggest surface area on our bodies. That too takes a lot of beating and neglect, and remember the routine that is in place at a young age, will show in the long run. The body needs protection from the harsh elements of the sun, wind and pollution.
Skincare:
It is never too early to empower girls with the knowledge to prevent and maintain before having to repair life's damages to their skin. They will be taught how to conduct a skin and facial analysis on themselves as well as what products to use.
Photography:
There is nothing worse than seeing a horrible photo of yourself. This section will teach the girls posing and posture techniques. They will each receive their own professional photo as well as learn more about photo editing.
